The 150th British Open is underway at the Old Course at St. Andrews, the Home of Golf. Follow this page for updates throughout the day.

Cameron Smith and Cameron Young are among the leaders at 4 under, having gotten off to quick starts in their first rounds.

Smith, the Players Championship winner in March, has four birdies in his first ten holes. In his first Open appearance, Young has four birdies in his first eight holes.

Joohyung Kim, 20, of South Korea, and Barclay Brown, 21, of England, are also tied at 4 under.

Van Rooyen, Erik Aaron Rai withdraws Erik van Rooyen of South Africa withdrew before his afternoon tee time due to a neck injury, the second withdrawal of the day after Justin Rose.

He is replaced in the field by Englishman Aaron Rai, who finished T19 in his Open debut last year.

Rory McIlroy makes an early birdie.
Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and defending Open champion Collin Morikawa are in one of the day's marquee groups. McIlroy began with a par 4 birdie.

McIlroy won the 2014 Open at Royal Liverpool and the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla, but he has not won another major since. He had strong starts at both the PGA and the US Open this year, but he couldn't win either on the weekend.

"I'm doing well. I'm in good shape. "My confidence in my game is at an all-time high," McIlroy said earlier this week. "I can't come in here thinking that this is my chance. I just need to go out and play a great tournament. I need to put together four good rounds, and hopefully by the end of the week, that will be enough to win."

Min Woo Lee Breaks 4 Under:
Min Woo Lee of Australia took the early lead at 4 under with an eagle at the par-5 14th.

The 23-year-old is a member of the DP World Tour, and his most recent victory came at the 2021 Scottish Open. He triumphed in a three-man playoff that included last month's U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick.

Last year, Lee failed to make the cut in his first Open appearance. His sister, Minjee Lee, won the US Women's Open at Pine Needles last month.

Ian Poulter is the Open's first Eagle.
Ian Poulter birdied the 150th British Open with a 54-yard putt off the right side of the par-4 9th green. Poulter addressed the audience after the shot, raising his hand to his visor as if to say he couldn't see that far.

After his first nine holes, the Englishman was tied for the lead at 3 under par with Brandon Wu. In 2008, he finished second in the Open, four shots behind winner Padraig Harrington.

Poulter, who is also a member of LIV Golf, was booed on the first tee.

"I've never heard him booed before, I wonder what he's done wrong," said broadcast commentator Sam Torrance. Torrance, a Scotsman, has played alongside Poulter on numerous Ryder Cup teams.

Justin Rose Resigns:

England's Justin Rose withdrew from the Open before his 8:14 a.m. start time, citing a back injury, along with fellow countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Italy's Francesco Molinari.

Webb Simpson is the early North Carolinian leader. Webb Simpson started in the first group and birdied the third, fifth, and seventh holes to get to 3 under par. At the eighth, he fired back.

Last year's British Open saw the 2012 US Open champion finish T19, and his best finish in the championship was a T12 in 2018.

Thursday Tee Times to Remember
Game No. 1 of the 150th Open began at 1:35 a.m. ET (6:35 a.m. in St. Andrews) with 1999 champion Paul Lawrie, Webb Simpson, and Min Woo Lee. Threesomes will play until 11:16 a.m. ET/4:16 p.m. local time. Other notable groups (all times are Eastern):

Tiger Woods, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Max Homa arrive at 9:59 a.m.
Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm, and Harold Varner III tee off at 10:10 a.m.

A Look at the Prognosis:

Any forecast for the Scottish coast should be taken with a grain of salt, but the firm and fast conditions experienced by players during practise rounds are expected to continue with relatively mild winds.

Current Betting Odds:
Rory McIlroy is the betting favourite to end an eight-year major drought, but +1000 appears to be a small number in such a stacked field. Xander Schauffele, who has won his last two PGA Tour starts, is the second favourite at +1400. According to the SI Sportsbook, here are the favourites and notables:
